Certain breeds have certain predispositions (Labs: intelligence, Rotties: loyalty, Pugs: independence) but no dog has the visiousness that pit bulls (not even a breed) have been accused of. That's trained into them by bad people. They pulled the same crap with Dobermans in the 80's, Rottweilers in the 90's, and German Sheppards at some point as well. It's total bullshit.

If I were to come upon one that needed adoption, I would take them in, but I prefer mutts.

I would own one if I raised it myself. Don't think I would adopt an adult unless I were personally familiar with its previous situation.

That's why I wouldn't adopt an adult without being very familiar with how it was raised. I don't believe they are inherently more aggressive than other breeds, but being bitten by one is definitely more dangerous.
