Sick of Radar Traps?

Funny that this thread just started, I just got pulled over during the Easter weekend going to Montreal on the 417, just before the Ontario border ended. I've not gotten a speeding ticket in over 5 years before this!

What did you get nailed with and here's hoping your insurance allows you one ticket as a freebie?

I know some do and others do not.

I had a minor ticket 2 years ago for improper lane change. My insurance company decided to do a check and found it, raised my premium by $400 for one ticket, telling me it would drop on the next renewal. Needless to say I changed to a company that forgives one ticket and lowered my premiums by $600.

He's a plug for Dejardins Insurance. Cheapest price I was able to find.

Well, let's not get into the details of what I got nailed with, though I'll freely admit I was guilty. The ticket did not mention any demerit points, just a fine. Is the demerit just supposed to be assumed?

One time, when I was a Uni student, I got caught not coming to a full stop at a stop-sign while on a bicycle! I had to show my driver's license so I'm sure it got put on my driving license points. Though I really didn't check to see if that was the case. In any case it was over 20 years ago.

It your ticket is speeding over 10km an hour you will lose points. if you have your ticket reduced in court to only 10 over, you will not lose points but your insurance will treat is as a moving violation against you. Also worth mentioning is if the Officer reduces your speed on the spot and you take it to court to plead not guilty, the crown will bring the ticket back to its original charge because the Officers makes note of the reduction. If you think your tickets gets reduced in court yes the chances are good but then the sir charge drives the price back up. The best outcome is the Officer not showing up but the court OT money is too good for them to pass up.

Actually I think you gain demerit points and it starts at 16kph over the speed limit

3 demerit points will be added if you are convicted of:
  • Exceeding the speed limit by 16 to 29 km/hour

Hmm, okay things to ponder. On top of this, I had a small fender-bender in my car today, which is still probably going to cost a couple of thousand to fix!

I checked with a buddy at OPP...he said 18kmph is the point where points start to build, and most cops won't stop you for 18 over or less because of that.

I guess they give you a couple of km's leeway compared to the law just to eliminate disputes. Makes sense.

I stand corrected, thanks Train.

OPP will usually let you go 20 over on the highway but not on the road ways. I was pulled over for 12 over south bound at Black Creek under the bridge last year.

If it's OPP, that's the RIDE unit, and it is considered a plum job.

Highly doubt it would be a RIDE program if they have cops on the bridge with radar guns. RIDE programs tend to set up where there are "natural traps" that already have you moving slowly and you can't see them far enough in advance to escape, like on/off ramps, for example.

Did you get nabbed Jessica?

Highly unlikely if all six cruisers were already at the side writing tickets. Even if lovely Miss Jessica was speeding at that moment, she probably would have gotten away if all cops on the ground were too busy to pull her over.

Which goes back to my point about how costly this system is.

Minimum of 8 cops to nab 6 cars at a time, with hundreds of cars still speeding by until they can pull over the next 6.

Versus one cop in an unmarked van at the side of the road capable of recording hundreds of violations per minute until the entire flow of traffic slows down to behave properly.

I'm sorry Art but we don't need a tax grabbing camera by the side of the road raking in the cash so our government can squander it on stupidity. The speeds on the 401 should legally be increased to 120, along with the DVP, GARDINER, 404 etc.....

Yeah, I think so too, there are plenty of highways that really should be marked as 120kph. Some people might say that that's only going to mean people are going to then feel the need to go 140kph, but I don't think so, 120 seems to be a very natural cruising speed limit for most roadways, and 130 feels like a very natural passing speed limit. I think the narrowness of the lanes themselves act to naturally curtail the speed of cars.

Good to know but to be honest I never speed anymore.

Just in not that big of a hurry to get where I am going I guess.

And shockingly enough I haven't a ticket in over 25 years. No accidents either.

Funny the way that works out eh?

I would rather have a "tax grabbing" camera at the side of the road raking in cash from speeders than face the road tolls the province is about to enact.

Let speeders pay voluntary tax. Let Maurice and me drive the same road without forking out for tolls.

Agree entirely. If I speed and get caught, my fault. It's like parking without paying for the space...if I get caught, I have no one to blame but myself.

And the media, of course. And probably Rob Ford.
