Picking up on Baz's thread on Rob Ford, the tax situation in Ontario is just getting stupid.

Income tax - 48% on all income above ~$85k, 1/3 (33%) on any other material income

Property tax - Significant amount of your after-tax dollars - A tax on the tax as you don't get to deduct this or other consumption taxes.

HST - Significant tax on almost all consumption including major purchases like cars - 13%. Again a tax on the tax as you don't get to deduct this or other consumption taxes if you are a person (not a corporation).

Gas Tax - I beleive that over 50% of our fuel price is related to tax

Airport Tax - Recently purchased plane tickets to Europe - $350 (fare) + 550 tax (no joke). As a comparison, you could fly from Buffalo to almost anywhere in the states for $200 to $300 all in.

Other - Licenses, health cards, annual health care levy, water fees, other engery fees, permit fees, etc.

Then they now want an additional levy for public transportation of $500 per year - WTF

We have to stand up. This is ridiculous. Where is all the money going + we have huge deficits to finance additional spending.

Let's riot.

I never advocate violence but we should be more careful who we elect and we should voice our opinion to our MPP or MP or City Counsellors. It appears that the only special interests (unions, protestors and big corporations) are getting heard and normal hard working Canadians just take it.

It is hard to be upset when you live in Toronto with so many good things and a good economy for the last 40 years but the City and the manufacturing base are getting weak and we need to have the government / and public servant unions to stop crowding out the private sector. Small slow steps need to happen including getting the right people as leaders. This is an issue for everyone - we all need to ensure that public sector is working as effeciently as possible. In addition, there are no special favours granted for big business or small businesses at the local level as well. It seems we just truck along and go with the flow. Hopefully, we will wake up soon. IMO if Toronto / Ontario keep going at this rate, we will end up like a few US states / bankrupt cities / European countries in 10 to 30 years.

We just have to make small changes now in the right direction to keep the momentum going in this province and City. We have a very good place to live right now with relatively low unemployment - let's keep it that way.

Stop living in a euphoric world my friend. It does not matter who we vote for they are still going to shove it up our asses with taxes. Just look back at the last 50 years.

That is kind of true, but I am still a believer that if you want something you can make it happen.

I agree they are all the same, all pigs at the trough. Even Mayor Hazel is wanting to raise taxes across the board. Imagine another 5 cents on gas not to mention tax on tax on gas, it's disgusting! Another 5 cents on gas also effects food costs. Anyone else notice how much more expensive groceries are compared to last year?

That's the price you pay for living in the best country in the world. And yes, it really is.

We live in a great country perhaps one of the best. But that does not mean we can not make things better.

Yes - Food prices are almost twice the price in Canada as in the US. I was shocked when I went grocery shopping on a recent visit to Florida at how much we pay.

The biggest problem I see is that there is no accountability in government....

We have lobbyists begging for this and that to the point that in order to shut them up, they get given what they want and this needs to stop.

In Ontario, we have a provincial govt that is overspending to the tune of $100 million per business day more than we have coming in. I look around and I see OPP with brand new vehicles, command vehicles, atvs, snowmobiles, motorcycles all less than 2 years old. Whatever happened to using common sense and stretching things a year or two to save money? Windmills sprouting up everywhere thats COSTING us money instead of generating money. I looked at my hydro bill recently and saw all these surcharges being thrown in..... debt retirement charges..... it goes on and on..... and in certain towns and cities, having a clothes line to dry your clothes in your backyard is ILLEGAL.... I'm like WTF? Our hydro generation stations are overwhelmed at times and we're being forced to use clothes dryers to dry the clothes because some city or town politicians dont want "unsitely" clotheslines in people's backyards....

I look at these things and see common sense is going the way off the dodo bird.... Politicians need to be held accountable and I dont give a shit if you're a NDP, Liberal, Conservative or any other party supporter, the stupidity has to stop before it bankrupts our future.

We have WAY too many taxes as it is and too much overspending going on which in turn is going to drive up our taxes even more. People dont get rich spending money like crazy, they get rich by spending their money WISELY. Until this changes we;re going to go from being the best country in the world to an overtaxed, overburdened and bankrupt country. Yes I know we're going thru a recession, I had to tighten my belt and watch what I'm spending because my income has dropped. The government needs to do the same thing. Tighten that belt, watch where the money is going and use common sense above all. If they dont, all of you better start thinking seriously about who to vote for the next time we come up for an election.

Taxes on taxes is ridiculous, put an end to it by calling your local MP, MPP and councilor and tell them to smarten up and stop overspending.

Are you fricking kidding me? He knows NOTHING about running a country

The biggest charade being pulled over the public's eyes now by all governments and corporations is blaming the low ranking front line worker for all it's budget woes. In the meantime the fat cats at the top are raking in the money and lining their pockets. The middle class is being eroded and without a healthy middle class with decent paying secure jobs North America is going to stumble and have a hard time finding it's way to prosperity.

true combine that with bloated union contracts that no longer reflect the local economies.

You call it a bloated union contract I call it a fair NEGOTIATED wage.

Ask yourself, with all the cuts in wages, benefits and staff that has been happening in North America for the last 3 years, HAVE YOUR TAXES gone down?? NO THEY WON'T, the monies will be shifted elsewhere and most likely into someone else's pocket while the worker who once had a decent paying job is now suffering working 2 and 3 jobs.

you get no argument on that

the real answer is community oversight boards to approve spending

There is the reason I refuse to vote. Why vote to get shafted either way.
