Hi Louis 14. To your points: I knew two - went through elementary and high school with them - small town. Of course, they never identified back in the day but we all teased them. They knew and we did. We were very cruel.
One man. One woman. Lesbo, fag, homo, looser. Both came out in early adulthood after we all moved away.
Some of said - whatever! We'd hung out with them as friends despite their rep. Yes I was part of a looser collective. We all survived.
Still friends with them. And yea it was in Elementary/High School - Catholic - 30-40 years ago.
Oh and my lesbian friend: Smoking hot- still after all these years! And every time I meet her I tell her "what a pity, when she coulda had me" And she laughs her ass off.
And thats what the Rainbow flag is about for me.
Good posts Jack, thanks. I would like to re-assert that the point of this thread is not to establish pro- or anti-homosexual sentiment, but rather to establish if the Rainbow flag should be flown over elementary schools which are typically populated with young minds not capable of understanding or rationalizing in any mature manner the sexual and social concepts associated with contexts the flag represents.
I'm glad you were able to rise above petty ignorance in order to establish strong and lasting relationships with those of another sexual orientation. Wish more could do so.
But I would ask, at what age are we prepared to sacrifice the innocence of children for our own social or moralistic purposes? Flying the Rainbow flag indiscriminately over an elementary school would seem to be an arbitrary decision made by a nameless, faceless organization, with much less skin in the game, rather than by parents who traditionally know what is best for their children.
What gives an organization the right to determine what, and at what age a child will be faced with exceptionally difficult social content to deal with when they are at a developmental stage least prepared to do so? And when they do so without explicit parental consent or approval, especially in a sexual context, why are they not deemed to be the 'sexual predator' we all strive to protect children from?
