Any diet if not done properly can cause serious health problems. That being said, it is easy enough to educate yourself on how to balance your diet, vegan or otherwise. I've gone down 2 dress sizes since I went full on vegetarian but truth is I have to CONSTANTLY plan out meals and snacks that ensure I get everything I need, it feels like a full time job sometimes but I do enjoy the challenge; side note, the protein myth is a lie, vegetarians and vegans get more than enough protein, in fact they often get far too much soy protein, it is one of the biggest things you have to watch out for because you can gain a lot of weight if you're taking too much of that in and not get enough minerals and nutrients. Vegan is my next step and I look forward to it (once I can let go of dairy).
An example of a vegan meal that is loaded with nutrients and no soy protein:
Curry coconut cabbage soup (veggie broth base instead of meat), I use tumeric and sometimes lemongrass, in it as well and it is honestly one of the best damned things ever. If you like thai food, it will make you feel like you are there. And virtually no fat.
