Windows 8 reminds me of Windows first releases.

Windows itself was not an operating system it was a GUI "over lay" for DOS.
The idea behind it was to allow IBM compete for the kids entering the job market.
These kids grew up on MAC in the schools. DOS was not a graphical interface and IBM saw that as a problem
So the approached Bill Gates for a solution.

Out came Windows and it filled the gap. Not so much with computer professionals, who still preferred DOS.

Later on came 95 ( first working version of windows ) and that was still just an over lay.
The same was true of 98, ME and XP.
XP was hugely popular because the PRO version was intuitive to use.

Along comes VISTA which was in fact a revamped OS and self contained.
It was such a radical departure from XP but a necessary evil.

Windows 7 brought back the features people loved in XP while still working with the new OS and people once again loved it.

The growth of the TABLET has spurred the need to being able to truly and seamlessly move between the Smartphone, Tablet and PC or Lap Top.

8 was already a mobile system that sotra worked so into the market came the Full Blown version.
In a similar fashion it has been accepted by younger users and rejected by the older ones.

Windows 9 was to be an expanded version of 8.x with better features and compatibility.

8.x was so universally paned by business that Microsoft decided to abandon it completely.
And scrapped 9.x.

10 will be to 8 what 7 was to Vista...........Same operating system as 8.x but bringing back the beloved look and feel of 7.x

The problem is for the hacker to find someone browsing with Internet Explorer.

You had to be a lot smarter to use a computer, back then.

:biggrin2:

I taught myself how to do a lot of things on computer way back when I first started learning how to use them. Now I'm just grateful when I find a good set of instructions, although my thought processes are still faster than all the computers I've had.

they are getting quicker but nothing can beat the human mind for processing dirty thoughts

It's a lot of fun being able to multitask and think many naughty thoughts simultaneously. :biggrin2:

Sex and computers are a natural combination.

Five-year-old passes Microsoft exam

A boy from Coventry has become the youngest computer specialist in the world.

Ayan Qureshi is now a Microsoft Certified Professional after passing the tech giant's exam when he was just five years old.

Ayan, now six, whose father is an IT consultant, has set up his own computer network at home.

He told the BBC he found the exam difficult but enjoyable, and hopes to set up a UK-based tech hub one day.

"There were multiple choice questions, drag and drop questions, hotspot questions and scenario-based questions," he told the BBC Asian Network.

"The hardest challenge was explaining the language of the test to a five-year-old. But he seemed to pick it up and has a very good memory," explained Ayan's father Asim.

Mr Qureshi introduced his son to computers when he was three years old. He let him play with his old computers, so he could understand hard drives and mothecommunitys.

"I found whatever I was telling him, the next day he'd remember everything I said, so I started to feed him more information," he explained.

"Too much computing at this age can cause a negative effect, but in Ayan's case he has cached this opportunity."

Ayan has his own computer lab at his home in Coventry, containing a computer network which he built.

He spends around two hours a day learning about the operating system and how to install programmes.

When the boy arrived to take the Microsoft exam, the invigilators were concerned that he was too young to be a candidate.

His father reassured them that Ayan would be all right on his own.

The test is usually taken by people who want to become IT technicians.

Regin, new computer spying bug, discovered by Symantec

A leading computer security company says it has discovered one of the most sophisticated pieces of malicious software ever seen.

Symantec says the bug, named Regin, was probably created by a government and has been used for six years against a range of targets around the world. Once installed on a computer, it can do things like capture screenshots, steal passwords or recover deleted files.

Experts say computers in Russia, Saudi Arabia and Ireland have been hit most. It has been used to spy on government organisations, businesses and private individuals, they say.

Researchers say the sophistication of the software indicates that it is a cyber-espionage tool developed by a nation state. They also said it likely took months, if not years, to develop and its creators have gone to great lengths to cover its tracks. Sian John, a security strategist at Symantec, said: "It looks like it comes from a Western organisation. It's the level of skill and expertise, the length of time over which it was developed."

Symantec has drawn parallels with Stuxnet, a computer worm thought to have been developed by the US and Israel to target Iran's nuclear program. That was designed to damage equipment, whereas Regin's purpose appears to be to collect information.

Bill Gates drinks water distilled from human faeces

Bill Gates drinks water distilled from human faeces

Bill Gates has drunk a glass of water made from human faeces, to showcase technology he said could provide clean water in the developing world. The Microsoft founder said he wanted to begin sending processing plants around the world after tests later this year.

The project was welcomed by WaterAid, which said that it could particularly help in urban areas. According to the charity, some 748 million people worldwide lack clean drinking water.

In a video posted on his blog, Mr Gates watched as the human waste was fed into the processor, before drinking the end product from a glass.

"The water tasted as good as any I've had out of a bottle. And having studied the engineering behind it, I would happily drink it every day. It's that safe," he wrote in the blogpost.

In the video, the developer of the Omniprocessor system, Peter Janicki, says the raw "sewer sludge" is first boiled, during which process the water vapour is separated from the solids. Those solids are then put into a fire, producing steam that drives an engine producing electricity for the system's processor and for the local community. The water is put through a cleaning system to produce drinking water.

"Why would anyone want to turn waste into drinking water and electricity?" Gates asked. The answer, he wrote, was because "diseases caused by poor sanitation kill some 700,000 children every year, and they prevent many more from fully developing mentally and physically". He added: "If we can develop safe, affordable ways to get rid of human waste, we can prevent many of those deaths and help more children grow up healthy."

Thanks for posting this, I was listening to a story this morning on this. Very interesting approach.

From what the report stated, the waste material is heated to 800 degrees and the water vapor released is collected and condensed to purified water.

I have a lot of respect for wealthy businessmen like Bill Gates who invest their resources into finding solutions for global problems, instead of retreating to a private island and forgetting about the rest of the world.
