According to a confirmation by Microsoft late last night, a new zero day vulnerability has been found to affect every version of Internet Explorer. In other wordsover a quarter of the entire browser market.

Attacks taking advantage of the vulnerability are largely targeting IE versions 9, 10, and 11 in something called a "use after free" attack. Essentially, the attack corrupts data as soon as memory has been released, most likely after users have been lured to phony websites. Microsoft explains:

The vulnerability exists in the way that Internet Explorer accesses an object in memory that has been deleted or has not been properly allocated. The vulnerability may corrupt memory in a way that could allow an attacker to execute arbitrary code in the context of the current user within Internet Explorer.

An attacker could host a specially crafted website that is designed to exploit this vulnerability through Internet Explorer and then convince a user to view the website.

Microsoft is currently investigating the issue and will likely release an out-of-cycle security patch to take care of the problem. Let's just hope it comes soon, because according to security firm Fire Eye, this means that about 26 percent of the entire browser market is at risk.

And since Windows XP users won't be getting the patch for this fairly threatening bug, anyone still running the now-unsupported software is going to have to cough up some big bucks to stay safe.

I don't like IE myself either.. I prefer Firefox. Chrome used to be my favorite, but it began to get buggy for me...

Firefox 29 Launches With Major Redesign, Firefox Account Integration

After loading it for the first time, chances are you’ll be slightly confused. This is Firefox’s most radical redesign since it moved to its rapid release schedule a few years ago. The new version looks significantly more like Chrome than the old Firefox. It features the same three-bar menu on the right and rounded tabs, for example. At the same time, though, it keeps the separate search form — something most other browsers have now done away with.

“The point of the redesign is to adapt the design to how modern users engage with the web,” Mozilla VP for Firefox told me earlier this month. In total, the team made 1,300 user interface and bug fixes since it first publicly introduced the Australis redesign about a year ago.

I'm tempted to try the new version. I used FF before switching to Chrome, and find it handy to have several browsers to choose from. I don't like the ad tracking on Chrome.

Agree Ms S. Chrome keeps getting advocated but the ads give it a virally feel. Like FF better.

May have a point there.

And while it sounds like it’s just for fun, the logic behind the Gates Foundation grant is that if it feels good, men are more likely to wear one
