Octopus mom sets record waiting 4.5 years for eggs to hatch

Researchers at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute in California first spotted the octopus in 2007 about 1,400 metres below the surface of the water in Monterey Canyon. When the remote-controlled submarine returned a month later, she had about 160 eggs attached to a rock. For most shallow-water species this period is about one to three months, but this was the first opportunity to study an octopus in deeper water.

Researchers kept returning to the site and as they describe in the video below, weeks turned into months and months turned into years. They knew it was the same octopus, who they nicknamed Octomom, because of specific scars. As the months dragged on the octopus grew weaker, possibly because octopi usually never leave their eggs – not even to feed. Octomom would shift slightly, but would always stay over the eggs as she fought off crabs and turned from purple to white. Then one day, when the researchers returned she wasn't there. Only the egg cases remained.

Monster crocodile eats shark

A monster crocodile has been pictured swallowing a four-foot bull shark whole on a riverbank in northern Australia. Brutus is easily identifiable by not only his huge size, but by his missing front leg – believed to have been lost in a shark attack many years ago.

Bernie Ecclestone is an exceptionally wealthy man who until recently will have been familiar to Formula 1 racing fans and quite unimportant to the rest of the world.

Only what he did today should make him a figure of global notoriety: Ecclestone paid $100 million to have a German court dismiss corruption charges raised against him that could have resulted in a 10-year prison sentence. No wonder he's laughing.

The prosecutors in the case decided to accept Ecclestone's settlement offer on account of his advanced age and the anticipated difficulty of obtaining a conviction. This is in spite of the fact that Ecclestone admits to having paid millions of dollars to a German banker that has already been successfully prosecuted and is currently serving his own prison term.

The moral of the story, therefore, seems to be that if you're going to engage in high-level bribery, you should always save up enough to make sure you can buy the court as well if you are ever caught.

A 50-year-old man died after he got a vibrator stuck up his anus and left it too long to seek medical attention because he was embarrassed, an inquest has been told.

Southwark Coroners’ Court heard it took Nigel Willis five days to muster the courage to get help after accidentally lodging a dildo inside himself last year.

Mr Willis, who lived in Forest Hill with his mother, was taken to Lewisham hospital in December but succumbed to his injuries in February this year despite having the vibrator removed.

The sex object had pierced his bowel, which led him to suffer septic shock.

‘The history was that his friend or carer called an ambulance because he complained of dizziness, weakness and was unable to move from the sofa for five days,’ said Dr Adebowale Adesina, who works as a consultant at the south-east London hospital.

Mr Willis, who didn’t have a job and was single, cared for his elderly mother with the help of his neighbour.
