Can't you just squeeze one testicle really hard to make the fluid go into the other until they're even?

If one has been swollen for a while, meaning several weeks, you should get it examined. If it's just swollen up for a little while, the fluid will likely get reabsorbed. It can happen with trauma to the testicle. Soft is actually good, in most cases, as it means they are healthy.
