TTC drivers caught texting behind the wheel.

Like I said he deserves to be reprimanded but not fired, that's all I'm saying!

And if your daughter is one of his passengers and he happens to get in accident.

Do you still feel the same way?

Firing does seem harsh for a first offense but unfortunately or fortunately the TTC will probably make an example out of this guy.

^^^ that's just it, the TTC can't do shit to the guy. The union will protect him.

Like I said earlier: did anyone hear about what happened to the guy caught driving drunk? Or the ones caught in the donut shop while a busload of people sat outside?

No, because like those, this too will be swept under the rug........

If is just that IF! Based on all the pics showing bus drivers on their cells God almighty we should've heard of crash after crash. Buses ramming cars as if they were in an amusement park in the bumper car ride.

Is a bus driver not allowed to go into a donut shop to use the restroom or maybe grab a coffee? The busload of people were sitting in a warm bus, WHAT's the problem?

Tell me something, did you ever abuse your authority when you were the boss or do something that you knew was less than moral or even legal?

Chunkster are you a member of a Union?

I use to be Dan, many years ago. I am now on the other side and I can see it from both sides. The problem is the public working in the private sector only sees it from one side and that is all union people are lazy, over paid bums. Which unless you've worked in one of these industries, it's impossible to know what really goes on in the working life of the employee.

I am a small C conservative at heart but I hate to see people being called out and having their lively hood threatened over a problem that can be rectified with a firm warning. If it happens a second time then I would agree he would deserve to be canned, but for God's sake not from a white knight with a camera wanting his 15 minutes of fame!!!!!:grrrrrr:

Ok, so according to chunky logic: if pilots don't crash while intoxicated, they should be allowed to fly while intoxicated? Just because accidents haven't happened yet, doesn't mean the act isn't harmless or dangerous.....

Need I remind you of that kind of thinking resulted in a little well documented accident...you might recall it, I think the vehicle was called...wait...umm THE CHALLENGER space shuttle? Ah so the O rings are frozen. So they've shrunk. So there might be a leak...so what? We've taken off thousands of times bef.......ka BOOM.....ore.......

No, a bus driver is not allowed to go to a donut shop and leave his vehicle unattended with passengers on board. It's in the rules and regs. Now you can say, oh my, so what? But what if some wacko punk decides to hop in the driver's seat and go blasting down the road? Oh, that would never happen? Well it happened just recently with a fricken SNOW plow.....

According to the ministry of labour an employee is allowed 2 15 minute breaks per shift and 1 30 minute lunch. These breaks are to be taken at the discretion of the employer NOT the employee. It was clearly outlined in the rules and regs that a driver could only take breaks at the END of his route when there were NO passengers on board.

As for abusing authority when I was the boss. Nope. Never. Never did anything illegal. As a matter of fact I was told to have one of my guys do something illegal and refused and got into a big argument with the GM over it.

As for a firm warning.....and the risk to their livelihood.....well, the stern warning was "it is illegal to drive while using a cellphone" ad campaign that was all over the news. As for the risk to their livelihood, wait, who took the risk? Not the employer. Not the TTC. Not the passengers. The DRIVER chose to risk his livelihood. No one forced him to text. In all those photos I don't see anyone pointing a gun to their heads demanding that they text their buddy about the big game tonight.....

One more thing: we're not talking about some dumb teenager here. We're not talking about some 10 yr old who skateboarded off the side of a bench. We're talking grown adults in charge of an expensive and potentially dangerous piece of equipment loaded with passengers who should know better. Not only should they have known better, they KNEW better and chose to ignore it.

Now's the time if anyone wanted to be a bus driver, apply. They have 3 openings!!!!

You have to wonder if the remaining drivers will take notice? They should...people will be watching now........

Oh he's fired yeah, you boys feel better now that you believe the public has finally received their pound of unionized flesh?

Fact is they are indefinitely suspended and if you would have heard Bob Kinnear today being interviewed by John Oakley correctly said the process has begun. Although the union does not condone texting while driving an investigation is in order and arbitration will follow.

The odds are they will be relocated to another job but of course you still get your pound of flesh because for the next 6 months or more these 3 TTC drivers will be in pins and needles. Not to mention their wives and children too, but who cares HE WAS TEXTING WHILE DRIVING!!

Funny how the citizen wannabe journalist is now claiming that he feels so bad the driver lost his job because of his picture. Boohoo, I just thought he would get warned, FUCKING nimrod!!

Tboy have you always obtained a permit for all and any work you have done? Come on be honest? Think carefully dude over your years and I am assuming you are in your late 40's early 50's. Think carefully of how many times you have done something you shouldn't have.

These poor men have had 20 years or more of loyal service and now for one fuck up because some asshole had to go to the media instead of just reporting the driver to the commission have possibly lost their lively hood. I guess who cares about these 3 families because these jerks were texting OMG let's stone the fuckers.

You're right, boo fucking hoo that they paid the price for their stupidity.

As for me getting a permit or not, that isn't a proper analogy. A proper analogy is whether I do something that is unsafe or not. In other words, mis-wiring a circuit, using 2 x 4 instead of 2 x 10s, etc. No I have NEVER done that and will not do something that will endanger my customers.

I can tell by your posts that you're obviously MORE union than non, what about the safety of the passengers that the drivers unnecessarily put at risk? Did you ever stop for a second and consider that? No, I don't believe you did.

Let me ask you: In your opinion, is there ANY offence a driver can do that would warrant a firing? Driving while impaired certainly isn't, in your opinion so I have to wonder if not that, what is?

Maybe every car driver caught texting should lose their job instead of being warned or suspended.
Plus have their car crushed in front of their family and neighbours!

Better yet, bring in the death penalty - that way they'll never do it again. :666:

Dude don't put words in my mouth. Driving drunk in my opinion does warrant a firing and if you are about to try and claim that texting is the same then you're reaching for straws. I can text and drive but I surely would never drive drunk.

As for permits, I am going to assume that in your career you have by-passed this step. I wonder if Mike Holmes were you boss if he'd fire your ass. https://www.nationalpost.com/homes/Mike+Holmes+Permit+make+critical+suggestion/3576575/story.html

Point is everyone at one point in their career, be it private sector or unionized commit acts that can be considered firing offenses. Is it wrong to look at an individuals career and base the discipline on his or her record or should we all lynch workers based on public sediment or media frenzy.

I haven't worked in a unionized environment in over 15 years bud. If truth be told and I won't elaborate more than this but I actually employee 15 people and treat them fairly so I never have to hear the union knocking on my door. :he:

You make some good points chunky but please ditch the avatar, PLEASE!!

Here I'll even help you!

If their job is driving passengers around? then I agree that they too should lose their jobs......

Dude, didn't you read my previous posts where studies have indicated that texting while driving is WORSE than driving while intoxicated? About 3x worse as proven by the studies......so if you openly state that you text while you drive, you're openly stating that you drive while impaired.....(and since you don't know it, impaired driving doesn't just mean under the influence of alcohol, that means cough medicine, using your cellphone, shaving, texting, using your laptop, reading a map etc....whatever "impairs" your ability to operate the vehicle safely...)

Blah blah blah.....BFD. Doesn't matter whether you work for a union or not, you still have the union mindset as proven by your statement.

As for media frenzy, give it a rest. It is proven beyond any shadow of any doubt that operating a vehicle while texting impairs your ability by as much as 35% to operate that vehicle safely.

Would you fire someone if they were operating a forklift while drunk?

Once again: your permit analogy is incorrect. Having a permit or not does not automatically indicate a job is done safely or not. Just like driving w/o a licence doesn't automatically indicate that someone can't drive. Just like driving with a licence doesn't automatically indicate that someone can drive safely. Get over it, you're wrong......
