Woman says she felt fat-shamed at Islands of Adventure ride

....and you can get enough docs to say that sexual addiction is a disease. My point is that you can get help and you can not be obese.....just like you can get help and get off of heroine even if it is one of the most addictive substances on the planet.

So the American Medical Association got it wrong? Really? This is your argument? C'mon, man....

Genetic obesity is a disease that affects a significant portion of the population, and it is a disease that affects these individuals outside of their control. While there may be treatments available to affected individuals, their lifestyle/behaviours are not the cause of their condition. Treatments vary for these conditions, but are not limited to exercise and dietary restriction(s).

Other individuals who are not affected by a genetic pre-condition may well present with the same physical symptoms as those who are; namely physical obsesity, high BP, blood sugar disorders, etc. THESE individuals likely can treat these symptoms exclusively through exercise and/or dietary restriction(s).

BTW - once and addict, always an addict. Addiction is never cured, only managed day-to-day, over time. An alcoholic will always crave alcohol, a smoker will always crave cigarettes, and a heroin addiction will always crave a fix. While there a numerous methods out there to help manage the physical substance dependence and the cravings, the addiction itself will remain for the entire life of the affected individual.

I will never be able to wrap my head around why people feel the need to tear each other down or try to make someone feel small.

And yet earlier you called me a moron. An inconvenient truth, no? Weren't you simply trying to tear me down and make me feel small? More hypocritical behavior from you. At least you're consistent in your hypocrisy. <SMH>

As for Damien I don't think I proved him wrong at all. I just stated a portion of my past experience and how I feel it relates to this topic.

It was a good post Maurice, and I applaud your broad accomplishments in the fitness and nutrition space. You've likely helped hundreds who never knew how lucky they were to have such a dedicated, educated, and informed coach.

But to me, this only covers part of the equation - the part that relates to individuals who do not have a genetic predisposition to obesity. No amount of exercise, nutrition, nor dietary regime can address this given it's an inherent physical condition, not an acquired condition. I think this is the line the AMA is trying to draw. Yes, each affects different %'s of the general population, and yes, some will falsely justify their own lack of self-control and lifestyle choices by incorrectly 'diagnosing' themselves with a recognized 'disease'.

But it is also important to recognize that the legitimately affected segment of the population is actually growing exponentially, and the medical community does not really understand why. Many incorrectly correlate this growth to poor exercise and diet habits, largely because it's the easy out. This has also been a significant driver behind the public declaration - without visibility and recognition, there can be no funding to resolve the issue.

Your comment is like when ignorant whites from the deep south say shit like 'We don't discriminate against niggers just because they're black, that would be wrong!' They see themselves as enlightened whereas the rest of the world sees them for what they really are based on what they say. Your words betray your thoughts.

Sorry you got caught. Just suck it up and apologize for your offensive comment.

Funny how this comment is coming from Damien.

So, apparently the social justice rule is that fat shaming and discrimination is only permissible once you hit 500lbs and officially attain 'fat whale' status. Nice. :LMAO:

Where did you get that inference from? She was saying it was unreasonable to call her fat because the truth was she was NOT fat, or at least, not above the weight threshold that most people in society would register as "fat". That DOES NOT mean it's okay to fat shame someone if their weight threshold is above the limit that people in society would register as "fat".

Anyways, my 2 cents on the matter.

I am not a fan of making everything a disease or disorder that the medical community likes to do. However, I do believe in educating people and getting them to understand how to take good care of their body so that they will less likely suffer from long term diseases like heart disease or stroke in the future. Nutrition information needs to be taught since early school years and there should be less influence from food corporations on our food accessibility. Just look at a grocery store for instance - only like 10% of the whole area is where you buy fresh foods. The whole place is littered with packaged foods and junk foods that most people buy solely because it's cheaper and more convenient. This ESPECIALLY affects people of lower income because packaged foods tend to be cheaper than fresh foods and there's not a lot of places to shop for groceries, compared to fast food chains. So really this is not just about getting people to learn how to take better care of their bodies but also to restructure society so that it accommodates people of all income brackets especially those that are poor.

I take back what I said earlier since I oversimplified things too much, but whereas I strongly believe in education, I do not support body shaming. First, body shape has a lot of genetic component to it and just because someone is overweight doesn't necessarily mean they eat unhealthy. For instance, stress can contribute to body weight, as well as certain medications (i.e. schizophrenia medications) that fuck up your body lipid levels. Second, when it comes to advising someone about their lifestyle habits, it should only be for THEIR benefit and not OURS. For instance, it's one thing to tell someone that they are indulging in an unhealthy lifestyle and that they should try to change it to benefit their long term health. However, it's another to tell someone that "hey pretty, why don't you lose weight because you don't look pretty when you're fat", which is a very shitty thing to do.

You are a different story, you spend every single post you've ever made trying to belittle others. You can go fuck a nut for all I care.
You can't even refrain from commenting to me even though I have asked to you more than a handful of times.

Telling someone (usually a random person) that they should change anything about their appearance is totally tearing them down. No one has the right to approach someone and say that.

IMHO, nobody's tearing anybody down. It's just a healthy debate. Nutrition is a controversial subject. Check out all the diet books out there. Some people swear by a paleo diet, some people believe in the Atkins diet, some people believe in a plant based diet. Everybody's entitled to their opinion. It's a free country!!

Did you even read my post above?

Remember though that our health system is paid for by our taxes.

So in essence those individuals that are eating themselves into obesity and are incurring more health problems that require more doctors visits are being paid for by you and me.

Listen like Primo always touts I have no problem with somebody wilfully do damage to themselves. But I'll be dammed if I should foot the bill for their health care as a result.

The genetic predisposition to obesity is a controversial area I do admit. Everything I'm reading seems to be linking it with lifestyle factors as well.

[h=2] Is obesity in our genes?
[/h] Contrary to popular belief, obesity is rarely caused only by our genes. According to the Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH), the genetic factors linked to obesity comprise only a small part of the overall risk. However, the CDC notes that the variation in how people’s weight responds to the same environment suggests that genes do play a role in the development of obesity. Sometimes even people who carry genes associated with obesity don't become overweight, and vice versa. That's because, along with possible genetic factors, weight is also influenced by lifestyle factors. Even with a genetic predisposition, those who are overweight or obese may be able to change their weight slowly, through altering lifestyle habits and with support from family and friends. If your weight remains unchanged, healthy lifestyle habits will still make you healthier, regardless of what the scale weighs in at.

[h=2] Genetic rarities

[/h] HPSH reports that researchers have identified certain rare instances in which obesity seems to be caused solely by genetic mutations. One such rare form of obesity, called "monogenetic obesity," appears to be caused by spontaneous mutations in single genes that are involved in appetite control and food intake. Certain genetic syndromes are also linked to obesity, including Prader-Willi and Bardet-Biedl syndromes.

Another condition known as "common obesity" may also have a genetic link, based on evidence from animal models and twin studies. According to HPSH, this form of obesity is believed to be affected by multiple genes rather than a single gene. Common obesity may help explain why some people tend to carry more body fat than others. But it's not the whole story — lifestyle factors are also important.

In truth of the people I have worked and have discussed with colleagues. If their really honest with me, they can usually be broken down and figured out. Medication and other health issues aside.

The food industry is stacked against us pretty much from the get go. I get really annoyed with the advertising the most. ''Fat Free''......LOL. Yeah but packed with sodium and sugar. I might add that Dr. Uffe Ravnskov makes a really convincing argument in his book ''Fat and Cholesterol Are Good For You'' that dietary fat isn't the scourge that it has been portrayed to be. Dr. Malcolm Kendrick backed him up in his book "The Great Cholesterol Con''

It's unfortunate that your special ed academic background didn't prepare you sufficiently to understand the nature and context of the post. That the irony of the message was lost on you surprises absolutely no one.

More fake news.

Fact is, you are simply another example of social justice warriors who always want to play by two different sets of rules. You have no credibility because your behavior shows a consistent lack of integrity. You completely abandon the politically correct path you so strongly advocate the moment it becomes convenient and self-serving to do so.

And try to remember, it's an open forum. ANYONE can comment on what ANYONE ELSE posts. Post stupid shit and people will comment. Post stuff people like, and they will also comment. You don't get to control threads or dictate who can post what or respond to what you post on the board. Are you new or something? Did you learn nothing from Conway?

Another great post Maurice - thanks for that. Going to use it as a springboard into a deeper dive on the subject. :good:

Of course someone like that would be an idol of yours. Not surprised in the least.

I don't live my life around a political path, I don't live my life around a social path, I think that's what drives you nuts about me. I make up my mind on individual issues without being told what to think. How dare a woman do such a thing! Lol, you're honestly hilarious.

LOL! Definitely not an idol of mine (as many with lengthy memories will attest to) but he certainly schooled you on many occasions, then took you out back to wood shed to teach you a final lesson...:LMAO:

No, he really didn't. He is a goof and he is not the reason I am not over there anymore, not by a long shot.

What's with your twisted obsession of me being special ed? Do you wish that you are also special ed? You know what - that would be a great idea! Go join special ed, get educated because frankly you know shit, and tell me whether you regret everything you said about shitting on disabled people.

You two really do live in your personal little alternate realities where the game is simply to make up the truth as you go along. I see why Robertson is so frustrated as he attempts to keep you on point...

Nothing drives me nuts about about you - you're just not that important. Sorry. I do find it endlessly amusing though how you spend so much time virtue signalling and playing the role of moral social justice compass only to drop that tact the moment it becomes convenient. Engaging in false slander by implying I'm suddenly misogynistic because I disagree with you and call out your hypocritical behavior is pretty funny. Please share some quoted examples of where my posts have led you to this bizarre fake news conclusion...

You yourself proclaimed that you were special ed and damn proud of it less that 12 hours ago, but now it's me that has a twisted obsession with it??? Uh-huh. I simply called out the fact that that insight explains an awful lot about your perspectives and behaviors as evidenced by your posts. My bad for re-stating the obvious based upon your own self-disclosure. <rolls eyes>

Add to that the fake news that I have been 'shitting on disabled people' somewhere on this board??? Please do provide some references to that statement if you can, as again, you seem to simply make shit up as you go along because I guess your raw anger and uncontrollable misandry will only take your arguments so far.

Ladies and gentlemen, please proceed to the vending stands during intermission.

Fresh coffee is being served. Sorry, donuts and honey buns have been discontinued due to weight issues.

The schedule thread will continue in 15 minutes.
