Woman says she felt fat-shamed at Islands of Adventure ride

Yes because has a bigger girl I am really gonna slam ANYONE for their weight. Moron.

Your comment is like when ignorant whites from the deep south say shit like 'We don't discriminate against niggers just because they're black, that would be wrong!' They see themselves as enlightened whereas the rest of the world sees them for what they really are based on what they say. Your words betray your thoughts.

Sorry you got caught. Just suck it up and apologize for your offensive comment.

It's easy.

The only person who has any right telling somebody that their body appearance "is a disease" is the person owning the body. If you don't own their body, you have no right to dictate that they need to lose/gain weight or change their appearance just to satisfy your own expectations. Because in the end, their bodies are not designed for YOU; rather they are designed for THEMSELVES.

huh? :SayWhat?: :unknw: Hmmmmmm

''
A reason the AMA decided in favor of obesity as a disease is that it will decrease the stigma of obesity that comes from the widespread thought that it is just the outcome of excessive eating and not enough exercise. Doctors say some people do not have complete control of their weight.''

Yeah in my experience in the weight loss industry the overwhelming majority of people do have control of their weight. But the degree seems to vary from individual to individual.

Of course the AMA can make all those people who lets face it, don't really give a crap, a nice little tidy excuse for being irresponsible with their health. Because lets face it, it's just a disease right? LOL.

What exactly do you mean by 'your experience in the weight loss industry'? Are you a medical doctor, an accredited dietian, or some other form of licensed/certified/accredited weight loss authority? Just trying to understand the basis upon which you are making the assertions above.

Thanks Bosco. Much appreciated!! It's kind of funny, because my Family Doc, thinks that Dr John McDougall is a quack--LOL

Meanwhile, I've lost 25LBS on Dr. M's diet, and my blood pressure has come down naturally, as well. I'm now off BP pills and cholesterol pills completely. Also, it's a much cheaper way to eat. It's much cheaper to buy beans, potatoes, Rice, peas, pasta, salsa etc.....then it is to buy meat, chicken, fish, milk and cheese.

It's also funny that I really like my family doc, so "we've agreed to disagree", on this diet and lifestyle change I'm on. I also save money on pharmacy prescriptions as well. If I keep following this diet, then I'll have more money to hobby....LMAO

If I'm reading you right, I have to agree that medical professions seem to prefer pharmaceuticals as opposed to natural solutions and being a responsible adult.

Except I believe in a balanced diet, which includes fish, chicken, cheese and maybe once a week at most, red meat along, but always with the most important food group, plant based.
I haven't used cows milk lunch, and my evening snack of whole grain cereal for a very long time, use almond "milk".

I am "mature", and have blood test results that are perfect, require absolutely no medication.

Yes, IMHO, a lot of Docs just want to prescribe you pills, and not get to the root cause of the problem, which is the " bad food" you're eating.

In 2016 and 2017, I got really overweight. That's when I first watched the movie forks over knives, on the internet, and started doing things on my own.

It was in the forks over knives movie, that I first heard about Dr. John McDougall. IMHO, fish, cheese and chicken, are just as bad for you, as meat.

It was kind of funny, in that I had to sign a waiver that I was a non compliant patient, because I went off my blood pressure pills, without my doc's permission. However, I'm 55 yrs old, and still alive. I just couldn't stand the side effects of these BP pills anymore.

A yr later, my doc has gained new respect for me, because my BP is even lower on this diet, then it was when I was on the BP meds. I realize what I did was unorthodox, but it's my right as a patient to do whatever I want. I was willing to take the risks.

What I've learned in my research, is that Docs and pharmaceutical companies don't make money on healthy people. They want to keep you on these BP pills for the rest of your life.

wow i actually agree with Prim0 and Robertson... make the most of what you have and deal with it; however, the stigma between being tall and being fat can’t be compared in my opinion. i do think the ride operator did fat-shame her though. whether her weight was drug/disease-induced or not doesn’t matter—isn’t in any of our places to know!

i’m biased bc i’m only going off my own body and this will be a highly unpopular opinion, but for me it was much easier to lose than gain weight. i’ve been on both sides of the spectrum from 70lbs to 160lbs

not sure about others but i know there are 2 mandatory nutrition courses in mine. even a couple questions on the MCAT about it (focusing more on macromolecules and digestive enzymes etc. though). nursing actually focuses more on nutrition.

as for this hypertension issue... i think what these diets are trying to achieve is lowering salt intake which will 100% make bp go down since it lowers angiotensin production that constricts vessels. exactly what bp pills do! a better diet does make a world of a difference.

the bp pills aren’t just for the “lazy ones” but also as an subtle insurance policy for the doctors... quite like the not so subtle AMA winslow signed. can’t just say “you have dangerously high bp so dont eat chips” bc if you don’t listen and a heart attack occurs, it will be on them that they did not cure you to the best of their ability! anyway, congrats winslow on all of that!

That might make sense if they per ride, but I gather it is like wonderland with general admission in which case they got the same money either way?

Yes, but just to play devils advocate, the theme park wouldn't make any money if they kept on making exceptions to the rule.

The US has such high obesity rates. Obesity in the United States - Wikipedia

My intention isn't to fat shame, as I'm trying to lose some weight myself--LOL

See, my experiences have been different, I have a heart defect which naturally causes hypertension (because I cant pump blood like the average person), I could (and have) changed my diet drastically, and it wont amount for much. I am a vegetarian, I don't eat red meats (or any other kind) and I never add salt to my food.
I also have never been one to eat high sodium junk food. By all rational means, I should be healthy as a horse. Yet, I still have high BP and always will because of my ole broken ticker (genetic).
This is why I get a bit annoyed when people are so quick to judge or assume, you have NO idea what the other persons health history is at allllll or what could be contributing to their appearance. Hell, truth is I am not even really that fat, but I bloat up a lot because of the hypertension (edema). On a good day I can literally look 20 lbs lighter. Its annoying as shit but I have learned to live with it because there is literally nothing I can do about it besides staying hydrated ALL the time.

@LadyJacklyn yes, i have disease-induced edema and hypertension and i totally understand (your lifestyle seems much better than mine though!). an individual’s “normal” set point may differ largely from the statistical average for a number of reasons.

people are so quick to connect high bp with obesity that they don’t account for other factors like type1 diabetes in which some can have high bp yet experience weight loss (they don’t cause one another but can still coexist as two symptoms occuring at once) :)

Exactly! I think you said it best earlier when you said it isn't anyone's place to comment on another's body. I will never be able to wrap my head around why people feel the need to tear each other down or try to make someone feel small.

Started off working in gyms for about 20 years. Migrated to personal fitness training in the mid nineties.

Probably trained over a thousand individuals over the years. So we will call that hands on experience.

Thought about being a registered dietitian till I read what they teaching at the time The whole food pyramid thing, lol. Figured out fast that they years behind the cutting edge information. Although I did send away for 30 hours of lectures a few years ago by a professor at Rice University on nutrition a .But there wasn't anything in there which was new to me. So just started reading everything I could on nutrition and fitness. The beauty with the internet is that all the relevant course material can be just ordered to your home. Attended maybe 100 seminars and conferences. Because I'm older I have close friends who are naturopaths, high end trainers and performance coaches and one who is a chiropractor and another who is a GP. They are just a phone call or email away for me if I need some source material on something I'm researching. Usually we are all bouncing ideas and theories off each other.

Read once where if one was to spend 10000 hours on a subject then they were considered an expert. So at one time that might be considered true for me. But this whole field is constantly evolving and I have many close friends in the business which could run circles around me these days. I still try to read at least an hour a day on something nutrition or fitness related.

So basically I can only give my view based on the thousands of people I have worked with or colleagues of mine have worked with. And that is unless there is some sort of hormonal issues at work or some other sort of obscure medical condition the majority of people do have control over their weight. But as a trainer in Ottawa once told me 30 years ago now ''Everybody is an individual''. So to relate it to this board ''Your Mileage May Vary''.

Remember though that our health system is paid for by our taxes.

So in essence those individuals that are eating themselves into obesity and are incurring more health problems that require more doctors visits are being paid for by you and me.

Listen like Primo always touts I have no problem with somebody wilfully do damage to themselves. But I'll be dammed if I should foot the bill for their health care as a result.

@, excellent post. My BP became lower, when I cut out all the meat, cheese, fish, chicken, and other dairy like milk from my diet. From my research, lowering salt intake only makes your BP go down a little bit. It's cutting out those foods, that I mentioned above, that help to unclog your arteries, and as a result lower your BP.

IMHO, it's almost impossible to raise your cholesterol, if you eat a starch based diet. It has to be the diet, because even when I was much slimmer, many yrs ago, my BP was still high.

IMHO, nobody's tearing anybody down. It's just a healthy debate. Nutrition is a controversial subject. Check out all the diet books out there. Some people swear by a paleo diet, some people believe in the Atkins diet, some people believe in a plant based diet. Everybody's entitled to their opinion. It's a free country!!

I was on 5mg Amlodipine (Norvasc), for over 7yrs. One day, out of the blue, my whole bottom of my ankle began to swell up (Edema). It turns out the Norvasc BP pill, was the cause of my Edema. I quickly got off that BP pill. What a lot of people don't realize, is that these BP pills, can have terrible side effects.

hmmm yes but you could also argue what about these people?
- smokers for chemotherapy if they develop lung cancer
- mothers who choose to be pregnant arguable a hell of a lot of additional taxes just for bringing a person into the world
- drug addicts, who choose do drugs and cause car accidents or overdose requiring medical help
- those who are suicidal and need months in a psychiatric ward
idk if they are any different than those who “choose” to be obese. i’ll admit this is a view that i didn’t think of though but it’s just the small price we all have to pay for free healthcare. some need it more than others whatever the cause. no human in this world takes care of themselves 100% unless they live in a body condom lol it is a risk we all take to live our lives.

hoping this won’t happen but if the time ever comes and you need it life saving surgery amounting to thousands of dollars, others will be footing that bill too. if it all comes to $$, it’s really just all of us helping each other out a little. i think the focus should be helping those in need instead of determining the cause. now hypochondriacs.... that i agree with you 100% lol

good job for proving demien different btw. i admire your passion!

i agree they shouldn’t be the final last bit of hope and a healthy lifestyle definitely has to occur alongside these pills. edema is actually a very common side effect of amlodipine so i’m surprised it happened after 7 years with a low maintenance dose! the risk of intense arteriolar dilation leading to capillary hypertension (what you see as edema) can be higher when used long term for sure. the side effects aren’t pleasant to say the least.

i’m glad it gave you the strength to go off it though! i always advocate for the natural option rather than pharmaceutical drugs even though that technically isn’t my job lol

You bring up some very interesting points to debate and I'll be back later to address your points.

As for Damien I don't think I proved him wrong at all. I just stated a portion of my past experience and how I feel it relates to this topic.
