Woman says she felt fat-shamed at Islands of Adventure ride

Because as a larger woman yourself you should know the damage it can do when someone has people constantly trying to tear down their self esteem. It certainly doesn't make that person motivated to change it, it only adds to the hurt and downward spiral. Your views hurt people. Mine are trying to stop that from happening.

But I do agree to disagree. I have no desire to continue this conversation as it is going nowhere. At least crimson gets it. I have hope that there are still compassionate people in this world.

Um... what does it matter to me? It doesn't. This is a an open discussion thread so I was discussing. Is that not okay with you?

She thinks obese people should be a protected class. Do you know what that means? What that entails? That in itself is requesting special treatment and accommodation. That is not moving on. And blaming the park for following their rules of filling all available seating to capacity, is not fat shaming her. If she feels embarrassed by that policy, that is on her.

But now I am also repeating myself. So are you able to agree to disagree and if not, then please tell me why it matters so much to you and why does it bother you so much that my opinion is different then yours?

Excuse me but why should I know the damage based on my larger size???? That is a whole lot of assumption right there.

You see when I call out things like Prick using homosexual slurs, that is because those things are wrong. We both know that. And for the reason we don't need to get into.

However, I don't get "torn down" when people actually try to insult me based on my weight. To assume that being a larger woman automatically must come with a low self esteem or could be easily swayed by opinions of other twoards ones self, is .... let me call it for what is really is .... deflection.

You have an issue with being a larger woman. You have issue with feeling like people are trying to tear you and your esteem down. You get hurt and you go downward. I don't. Many other larger women don't either.. See how that works. You feel these things for her because you feel them for you. And by extension you think I should because I am also a larger woman.

And My view is what? That the parks policy is not fat shaming. That is my view. My view is that people who make choices for certain things in Their life should not be granted things like special accommodations or "protected classes". Seniors need to be a protected class because of their vulnerability. That is my view.

I am not calling her fat, I am not insulting her or even her weight. I am disagreeing with it being considered fat shaming because of a denial of a policy change that would be considered a special treatment.

And to be honest, since you want to go on and on about her not "technically" asking for one, you are technically right. She asked for it for someone else. Not a person with weight issues and that person was the one who was denied and told they have to ride in that turn. She choose to not go on and then did an interview.

I support her right to all of it. My view however is it is not fat shaming. Not even the in the slightest.

You need to take a step step back and see how this is a sensitive topic for you and why it is so sensitive. You need to look inward and figure out what you need to make you feel better about you. That is my honest opinion in the most loving and caring of tones and support possible to you.

And because I can see this is more of a personal sensitivity to you, I am not going to continue further with you. It is no longer just a discussion and it is clearly having an impact. I am not here to make a discussion have a clear negative impact on someone. Proving a point or debating an opinion is just not worth it.

EDIT: you edited your post after I finished mine to ad your last paragraph. I am glad we can agree to disagree. I will of course disagree that I have no compassion because of my opinion about a policy but that is neither here nor there.

With all due respect, I totally disagree with you. A yr ago, my Family Doc had a frank talk with me and said "I was becoming borderline obese." I was at my highest weight, ever in my life.

I took my Doc's warning, and did something about it. Like I've mentioned previously in HUBGFE lobby threads, I've lost 25LBS in the past yr, and started feeling better about myself.

In fact, I even went to the Allegra Spring fling last night, and had a great time. No way, I could have gone to the Allegra Spring Fling last yr, as last yr, I couldn't fit into any of my pants---LOL

P.S....Toronto has some "hot" looking SP's.....LMAO

The way I look at it, my Family Doc, "was being cruel to be kind", with me, by giving me an honest assessment of my ever increasing weight etc

Thank you for saying that. I didn't want to go into my own health issues again only to have the point be ignored, lol. Ugh.

@Prim0 i won’t pretend i know politics the way you do because it definitely isn’t my strong suit and not really something i’m interested in but this is the situation of healthcare in canada now.

like you, i don’t think it’s sustainable at all, but for certain canadian citizens like me, who are still incredibly young but have chronic illnesses, countless medications, chemo, new clinical trials and treatments i would’ve had to pay for... i’m glad this is what it is. yeah maybe i’m a bit selfish. but the way my health is, through no fault of my own, gives me a different view. i’ve paid for it in the past in a different country and it hurt the people around me so much. it was time the world helped me a little :)

i get that the country goes in debt to “do good”... what can we do about it? there is no perfect government. i tend to play both sides on liberal and conservative bc neither party has views i 100% believe in. or the rest of the parties for that matter.

i know i know, the world gave you these cards so deal with it... and i am. i actually agree with you on many points up there and no, i don’t think you’re some heartless guy. it’s just that i’ve seen hurt and suffering out there with my patients, people who never knew they would be injured to that extent and THAT’S when they are grateful for free healthcare. good rebuttal.

There is a huge difference in your argument, it is literally your doctors place to discuss your health with you. An absolutely stranger with no medical degree really has no right to approach you and say, "You need to do (insert whatever) like Muchelle said, even thin girls get this all the time, "You need to eat a burger or three", it's totally messed up that people feel a need to invade your space like that.

But that's it, final word lol, I said I had no desire to discuss anymore and I am gonna be a woman of my word and just leave it at this: #onelove #resist #doyouiwilldome
:PEACE:

Oh wait one last thing, pss to Winslow, it makes me super sad to hear you let your weight stop you from seeing "hot" sps, they honestly don't care if you have weight on you, they care if you are KIND! Love yourself man. Glad you feel healthier though, that is awesome. :good:

I agree with Jaclyn on that one. That is your doctor. (And about seeing hot SPs at any weight)

I don't see where a person said anything to rude or crual to her in this case though which is therefore different . She doesn't comment on something specific someone said.

She actually says: "It's somewhat humiliating to have to ask for an accommodation because of one's weight -- that you have to put yourself out there and kind of beg to be able to ride and embarrass yourself because of weight"

I think there is a way to talk about weight and yes - something cruel to kind is one of them. A doctor is a fair person who can do that. As Jacklyn mentions when others say things like put down or pick up a burger - those guys are being assholes and shaming and wrong and everything we know about that type of negative behaviour.

Again, and maybe I missed it so someone can point it out and say I was wrong, but in this story, there is no mention of rude or cruel language or anything. She simply made a request what was denied and she felt embarrassed by it.

Yes, but did you know, that even Doc's can get into trouble, for telling their patients to lose weight. My Doc, knew I could take the criticism. IMHO, A Doc could get into trouble, if they tell their patient to lose weight, and then the patient goes on to develop an "eating disorder", for example??

I didn't know that. I figured the doctor should be the one to discuss weight issues with and would be the safety person to bring up the topic with you.

Learn sometbing new everyday. Thanks

You're welcome. My Doc told me point blank, that for certain patients, he has to keep his mouth shut. Even if the patient is way overweight. He has to use his clinical judgement to determine, if the patient is emotionally ready to hear the truth, or not??

yes that’s true! really depends on the patient but they usually pawn the job off to a psychologist or therapist and let them do it gently, work through it etc. if there isn’t a physical cause. shows how strong you are winslow!:YMAPPLAUSE:

i actually met a girl who wanted to sue their doctor for blame as the root of her bulimia since she was overweight and needed to lose weight. physician malpractice is so hard to prove nowadays, i’m not surprised her case barely even started before getting shot down.

A question to the overweight people.

You feel shame on being fat or are you comfortable with it?.

Not comfortable with being fat at all. That's why, I've lost 25 LBS, over the past yr, and want to lose even more weight, going forward!!

Shame? No. Comfortable? Not when I was bigger than I am now. It doesn't have to be one or the other. I love being curvy, I have never wanted to be thin. That being said, I do want to be healthy, flexible, and have energy so I spend time eating right, working out, and doing things to improve my health. I have found a really good balance that I am comfortable with and hey, some may still disapprove but I don't live for them, I live for me. :good:

It's easy.

The only person who has any right telling somebody that their body appearance "is a disease" is the person owning the body. If you don't own their body, you have no right to dictate that they need to lose/gain weight or change their appearance just to satisfy your own expectations. Because in the end, their bodies are not designed for YOU; rather they are designed for THEMSELVES.

I'm not fat but I'm the complete opposite; I'm very very skinny and people who look at me assume that I'm malnourished and that I need to eat more. It angers me to hear somebody dare to tell me what I should do to my body just to satisfy their image of me.

Yes but everyone is entitled to an opinion.

I used to married. She was down to 150 lbs when we got married, we used to go to the gym together. She liked to bake. We used to go to amuzement parks, all over North America. Loved fast rollercoasters.
In 2 yrs, she hit 180. By 12 yrs married, she hit 250, and couldn’t fit on the rides at the CNE, the safety bar wouldn’t close. We built a home gym, I’m not skinny but stayed in shape to run and climb ladders at work.
She used the home gym for a couple months, put on more weight. She got drepressed and really bitter. Really really bitter, she found out I was seeing massage girls and strippers. Now it was all my fault. So, she baked more tried to fatten me up.
I couldn’t put up with her complaining. It was an argument over my daughters wedding that ended it. She was trashing the bride to anyone who would listen. I had to get her out of there. She finally asked if I wanted her to leave and I said yes please.
4-1/2 yrs later, she’s put on more weight, doesn’t work, doesn’t drive, and severe foot/ankle problems. She’s become a hermit according to her daughter. I still visit the grandkids, fortunately my ex doesn’t talk to me.
