There is a thread just started that I responded to with the below post. But I think this is such an important idea that I have decided to make another post as a lead. As a professional poker player, I am very very knowledgable with real world game theory applications. Apologizes if this a bit much for this forum.
People act in their own best interest. Sometimes people do not recognize that their own best interest can manifest itself as a selfless act to further the greater good.
See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prisoner%27s_dilemma for an example.
If no one reviews, everybody loses, if everybody reviews, this may be the overall best result for the users (that is us) and the worst for the SPs. Something in between is, from a game theory POF questionable. Certainly non reviewers gain in many game theory states, at the cost of reviewers.
But that doesn't mean a lurker is a bad person. They could be shy, or scared somehow their wife could find out. Or whatever. There is a game theory benefit to a lurker going to well reviewed SPs. that is they act as a proxy for the actual reviewer. Hence, there is some gain, though hard to see for the community.
I will elaborate in a much better fashion if there is a real interest.
