I personally loathe the word that was banned, and have NEVER used it in any context. When I hear others use it, I explain I find the word blatantly offensive and ask them not to use it in my presence. Funny, as I swear more than most in real life, but it's one of the very few words I object to simply because of the accepted usage (not its original meaning).

Having said that, banning any words is a balance between free speech (such as it is) and the general acceptance of the audience. As Sheik points out, that word was used in very derogatory ways against ladies of this board in PMs, and while banning the poster works for a very short while, I can understand the move to ban that word for that reason. True, it's unilateral, but as pointed out, this is a privately-owned board and we all abide by the rules or don't play (and HUBGFE is a lot less strict than some other boards that ban you for almsot any breach, real or perceived).

I dislike censorship in any form, but sometimes it is a necessary step (perhaps temporary, perhaps not) to prevent abuse of certain members of society from the stupid assholes that seem to be drawn out by forums like this.

Agreed. I am assuming the c-word is banned in the context of name calling or making derogatory comments about someone. That is reasonable. No ad-hominon arguments should be allowed.
