I watched a special on the quake on Nova and they said Japan can expect more....the plate that released the pressure last month runs all along the coast of japan and where it released pressure before, all that did was transfer the pressure to another area of the plate. Eventually all these other areas that are now under pressure, will release.
After last month's, 500 aftershocks hit. They had the geological survey display (which is live monitoring) and the shocks were coming fast and furious like nuclear explosiions. (they even added sound effects).
Japan is in for some serious trouble over the next few years.....
On another note, the tsunami wave was so powerful, a little communit set 8 kms up in the mountains now has a salt water lake where only a little river was before. The wave pushed so far inland it followed the river up into the mountains. Some locals expressed concern that once the lake recedes (if it ever does completely) they fear they are going to find all kinds of bodies carried upriver......scary thought.
Another interesting fact, as if knocking the earth off its axis and moving 13 feet closer to the US wasn't enough, parts of the japan coastline dropped 3 feet in elevation. This was the area that built the tsunami wall and lock system. Only problem now is since the land its built on is 3 feet lower, they're not tall enough....
I hope when they rebuild that they wisen up and not build so close to the shore....that would be suicide.
