Major tsunami damage reported in northern Japan after 8.9 quake

I watched a special on the quake on Nova and they said Japan can expect more....the plate that released the pressure last month runs all along the coast of japan and where it released pressure before, all that did was transfer the pressure to another area of the plate. Eventually all these other areas that are now under pressure, will release.

After last month's, 500 aftershocks hit. They had the geological survey display (which is live monitoring) and the shocks were coming fast and furious like nuclear explosiions. (they even added sound effects).

Japan is in for some serious trouble over the next few years.....

On another note, the tsunami wave was so powerful, a little communit set 8 kms up in the mountains now has a salt water lake where only a little river was before. The wave pushed so far inland it followed the river up into the mountains. Some locals expressed concern that once the lake recedes (if it ever does completely) they fear they are going to find all kinds of bodies carried upriver......scary thought.

Another interesting fact, as if knocking the earth off its axis and moving 13 feet closer to the US wasn't enough, parts of the japan coastline dropped 3 feet in elevation. This was the area that built the tsunami wall and lock system. Only problem now is since the land its built on is 3 feet lower, they're not tall enough....

I hope when they rebuild that they wisen up and not build so close to the shore....that would be suicide.

Tboy, appreciate your insights regarding quakes.

See, you CAN learn from watching TV (Nova is a fricken amazing show....if I taught science in Highschool it'd be a manadatory weekly assignment)

Interesting take Tboy.

I think the entire program is available on the Nova website for those that want to see the whole thing....it's really fascinating....

I've seen a lot of that footage before but the ones I saw didn't include the shots of the people trying to escape. That reminded me of the shots of the WTC where people were standing in the holes in the side.......you knew they weren't going to make it.....

Tboy, Insertion & Brady12

are you my groupies? It's like Howard Stern, those who like him listen for an hour, those who dislike him listen for four hours.

% do not mean anything, give what you can, where you can. Tboy, you claimed that you gave to sick kids even when broke but stopped when they asked for more. Did you start giving elsewhere. It doesn't matter, I applaud that you gave when not working.

I am not nor I have ever claimed to be a martyr. Those were your words B12.

Once more you prove your lake of reading comp...I specifically said "if they called and asked for more", two totally different things....

Who is twisting things now?

I think giving should be private and never pressured on anyone, it makes me wince to hear people brag about their contributions and also makes me wonder at the real reason for them.

I was asked a direct and specific question and answered. There is no bragging rights to donating anything clothing, food, furniture, money or time. Those are generic numbers used for the peanut gallery so they would have something to react to. You and anyone else who wishes can wonder anything you desire. Commence wincing if needed.

Don't need the pressure to donate, and yes there is bragging about the amount - doesn't make a difference if it's clothing, food, furniture, money or time.

Post 22.
I agree, mass sterilization is a big leap but it's a big problem that has been going on for decades. The thing is, not to sound condescending, is that it is tough to get the uneducated/illiterate to do the right thing on their own accord. Volunatarily? I can guarantee you the automatic response would be "no thanks".

Kudos to you for helping locally. I used to give monthly to sick kids hospital in toronto, even when I was unemployed and broke I still made my monthly payment...that is until they called me up asking for MORE money and then when I told them I was unemployed and broke and not to call me again, they did (call and ask for more money again).

WHich is also why I don't give money to things like "run for the cure" and "ride for the cure" etc. I think it is 80% of the funds raised go towards paying for the event, not research into the cure.

The high-lighted area would indicate that you do not comprehend your own statements. From your own comment, "I told them I was unemployed and broke and not to call me again!"

Would you sterilize or better yet obliterate the deformed, disabled, elderly, illiterate, mentally ill, palliative, physically ill and poor Canadians? You know the vulnerable? or do you refer to them as society's weakest links. Then, when survivial of the fittest comes into play would you do the same by colour, religion, height, weight or physical appearance? Would this ensure that you and yours have significant amount of sustainability? Would you turn on yours or would they turn on you?

Do you resort to the repilian brain often and the fight or flight response? Teaching a man how to fish does not work when there are no fish to catch.

Remember there is a difference between "if they" and "when they" as you so eloquently wrote.

One point that I strongly believe you could/would be an asset for is restoration. I think that you're the type that would help build a home or restore a life (fire damage) in your community. I believe you would give a shelter or someone in need the last 5.00 you had.

Maybe, you could stop listening to your own rhetoric, no more debate/discussion as it's not worth the time.

Enjoy your evening.
