Have a read of Iron John, Wild at Heart, and No More Mister Nice Guy. The authors point to the industrial revolution. Before that many boys would work with their fathers, and extended male family. There they would see what it was to be a man modeled before them. Now fathers walk out the door to work, leaving the boy to be raised by the mother, and educators (most of whom are female as well). Women are great at raising women, but they are rather lost raising men. But they do their best and raise men with poor male modeling, and dominant female modeling.

But what more confuses these men is in their hearts and hind brains they know something is wrong.

Very interesting, and takes it back even further in history than I had contemplated. Role-modelling is definitely important. I don't agree that being raised by a mother or a having strong female influences is necessarily a disadvantage. Respect between the sexes should be mutual.

As for men being the bread winners...
well who is stopping them.....go ahead do it...keep your wife home etc...

It's not about being the breadwinner or simply about providing. A man's job doesn't start or stop there. It's about the mentality and internalizing the role of a family leader, or alpha dog in a relationship. I would want my wife to work. I would want her to be very successful and bring home her own bacon (mmmmmm bacon.......). I've seen relationships where men lose/forfeit/sell their dominance and it doesn't work. Even where the wife lets the man be the "boss" in the household or in the bedroom (metaphorically, as far as I know), the same dynamics seem to play out time and again.

But I think there's something to be said about relationships with clear priorities, within a natural order and in the bounds of love and respect.

Of course, there are always exceptions. If a woman wants to be the alpha dog and her man wants to be a bitch, good on ya.

One other thing I want to add about men being bitches....I have a few friends who wives earn more than they do. So they take a bigger share of the household chores. Bless their hearts. But, it never fails. Eventually, their SOs resent it. Deep down inside, they just don't respect their men. Then they go out grocery shopping and, get this, he totals up her makeup, hair colouring, nail polish, lotions potions and all the other crap that women buy and NEEEEED and voila, the total is $200.00....

Now to qualify this, he told us he hadn't been out with the boys (didn't have any up here) since he moved here 6 months ago...
