I miss my dog. All she wanted to do is eat anything in site after we fixed her. I regret getting upset at her for going to our laundry room and eating our trash can, going to our washroom and destroying the toilet paper, eating the cat's food, pissing off our neighbors with her barking, pissing my wife off after she ate her expensive shoes and so on and so on.

So Yea I gave up my cats this year Gin and Indigo, Tonic died back in 2010 that was a horrible experience.

Since they've been gone I've been happy and sad all at the same time. then it got weird with my neighbours asking me about my cats. one lady ended up crying I had no idea what to say to her when the tears just came down and wouldn't stop.

So I got all this space feels like I just moved in again. but I don't know how people do it.

I have allergies to cats and dogs... I keep aquatic animals in 5 aquariums (2 frogs, 2 fresh water fish, 2 salt water fish, 11 types of soft coral, and countless other small under water creatures) as well as a large lizard.

Try gold fish in a large tank (not a fish bowl) with something to circulate the water... you can ignore them and they'll be happy... feed them every couple of days and they'll always be happy to see you. Keep the ratio of fish to tank size low... as long as you don't over populate the tank... and there is actually very little maintenance. Buy the tank and fill it with water at least one whole week before buying the fish.

I also have two pet frogs (Clawed African Aquatic frogs) which are also very low maintenance... I can't recall the last time I changed their water, but it was months ago... I rarely feed them because they feed themselves with any fly or fruit fly or spider (or mosquito in the summer) that ventures into the tank disappears with a small splash. I just fed them, it took them 5 minutes to realize there was food available. They croak in the spring time, a lovely soft melody that you can barely hear unless the TV is off. My last frog lived 16 years. These two are about 9 years old. Goldfish only live 4 or 5 years.
